As Samsung Electronics’ first artificial intelligence (AI) smartphone, the Galaxy S24, is an early success, it is expected that global smartphone companies will release smartphones equipped with AI functions or add AI functions through OS updates.
According to related industries and foreign media on the 11th, Apple will release iOS 18 at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024) to be held in June. The key update in iOS 18 is adding new AI features to the iPhone.
Apple has already been developing AI technology for several years, but after the ChatGPT craze, it is evaluated as being one step behind competitors in the AI phone field compared to competitors such as Samsung Electronics and Google.
iOS 18 is expected to implement the iPhone 16 series, which will be released together, as Apple’s first AI phone, and to evolve existing iPhone products through OS updates.
In addition, Google’s next-generation foldable phone ‘Pixel Fold 2’ is also known to be equipped with a dedicated AI assistant ‘Pixie’ and plans to introduce various on-device AI functions.

This can be interpreted as the effect of the recent increase in market evaluation of generative AI smartphones. Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S24 series, equipped with ‘Galaxy AI’, is enjoying early success, and it is highly likely that the same feature will be included in the Galaxy Z series, a foldable phone to be released in the second half of the year.
According to market research firm Gartner, this year, the number of smartphones with generative artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities in the global smartphone market is expected to reach 240 million units, accounting for 22% of total smartphone shipments.
“Rapid adoption of on-device generative AI capabilities and AI processors will eventually become basic requirements for technology vendors,” said Ranjit Atwal, senior director at Gartner.
