Good Friday in Thuringia: devotions, processions and clattering

In many places in Thuringia, Christians attended services and processions on Good Friday. They commemorated the death of Jesus. The services took place without organ music, candles and flowers.

In connection with Easter and the Resurrection, Good Friday is one of the most important holidays for Christians. In addition, it is a “silent holiday” – meaning that no dancing, entertainment or public sporting events take place.

Procession to Leuchtenburg

Around 250 believers marched in an ecumenical Stations of the Cross procession from Seitenroda Church to the Leuchtenburg Porcelain Church. The time from the condemnation to the crucifixion of Christ was recreated at eight stations. Some of the believers carried simple wooden crosses.

Rattling in northern Thuringia

Because the church bells are silent in many places in northern Thuringia, children and young people invite the faithful to the service. With wooden rattles and ratchets, they traditionally parade through the village and commemorate the death of Jesus.
