The SPD and Green factions in Hamburg want to encourage people to walk. In a joint application to the citizens, they are calling on the Senate to put together a pedestrian traffic strategy.
The topic is not entirely new: the Hamburg Senate presented its strategy for a mobility transition back in November. One of the building blocks in this is foot traffic. Transport Senator Anjes Tjarks (Greens) announced at the time that 20 to 25 percent of all journeys in Hamburg should be made on foot by 2030.
Pilot projects and clearly defined milestones required
The two government factions of the SPD and the Greens are now going further with their joint proposal. The Senate should present a walking strategy and define pilot projects and clear milestones, write both groups – because walking is “basic mobility”.
Applicant: The initiative is not a criticism of the Senator for Transport
Every path begins and ends on foot, the application states. And to make this more attractive, well-developed and barrier-free footpaths are needed. In other words: paths that can also be easily covered with a walker, wheelchair or stroller. Both groups say that it is time to put foot traffic more at the center of the mobility transition. When asked, they did not want the application to be understood as criticism of the Transport Senator.
