Under the motto “Hamburg stands up – against right-wing extremism and neo-Nazi networks” a large rally is scheduled to take place on Friday at 3:30 p.m. on Hamburg’s town hall market.
Many celebrities and a broad alliance of representatives of trade unions, churches, business associations and migrant organizations have come together to protest against right-wing incitement. Hamburg’s honorary citizens Udo Lindenberg and John Neumeier are among those there. A lot of support also comes from politics.
Tschentscher’s speech announced
Speeches will include Hamburg’s mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) and mayor Carola Veit (SPD). The incumbent council chairwoman of the Protestant Church, Kirsten Fehrs, is also scheduled to give a speech.
Kazim Abaci: “Democracy is in danger”
Co-organizer of the rally is Kazim Abaci, board member of the Entrepreneurs Without Borders association and SPD politician: “Our parliamentary democracy is in danger. It is high time that the middle of our society finally wakes up and stands up,” he says. The president of FC St. Pauli, Oke Göttlich, will also be there, as will representatives from the Hamburg Sports Association.
Protests after meetings between AfD politicians and right-wing extremists
After the meeting of AfD politicians and prominent right-wing extremists, thousands of people across the country have already protested against plans to denaturalize people with a migration background – including in Hamburg. The SPD parliamentary group calls on all Hamburg residents to take part in the demonstration, and the Greens and the Left also support the alliance’s call.
Organizers increase expected number of participants
Given the size of similar demonstrations in other cities, organizers in Hamburg have increased the expected number of police participants from the original 2,000 to 4,000 and now to 7,000.
In Cologne, so many people took to the streets on Tuesday evening that the route of the demonstration through the city center had to be changed at short notice. Police estimate that more than 30,000 people came together. They shouted slogans like “The whole of Cologne hates the AfD.”
Further information
After a secret meeting of right-wing extremists with AfD participation, the protest is growing. In Hamburg there was a demonstration in front of the AfD party headquarters. (01/13/2024) more
