Om Fahad had become famous for her carefree videos on TikTok in which she danced to Iraqi music: in February last year, a court sentenced her to six months in prison for sharing «videos containing indecent speeches that undermine modesty and morality public.” The government launched a campaign in 2023 to clean up social media content that it said violated Iraqi “morals and traditions.” A Home Office committee has been set up to comb TikTok, YouTube and other platforms for footage deemed offensive. According to the authorities, several influencers have been arrested. Civil liberties still remain limited for women in Iraq. Also in Baghdad, in 2018, the model and influencer Tara Fares22 years old, was killed on the street by some men.
