Second division football team FC Hansa Rostock has sorted out striker Lukas Hinterseer before the north and basement duel on Sunday at VfL Osnabrück. Both teams are under pressure to succeed in the fight to stay in the league.
Hansa Rostock’s offensive has not yet been able to spread fear and terror this season. With a total of 20 goals, the Mecklenburgers have the third weakest attack in the 2nd league before matchday 21. The team has only scored eight goals abroad so far – and yet the squad has had one fewer striker since Thursday. From now on, the third from last will be without Lukas Hinterseer.
The 13-time Austrian national player will not only be an outside spectator during Rostock’s guest appearance at bottom team VfL Osnabrück on Sunday (1.30 p.m., in the live center at >), but for the rest of the season.
Hinterseer only in the regional league team
The 32-year-old will train with the U23 team until the end of his contract in the summer and will also play in the Northeast Regional League. “Several discussions about his future were held with Hinterseer and his advisor during the 2023/2024 winter break and a change of club was suggested, as the striker will not be taken into account in the plans for the professional team,” said the club statement.

The attacker, who has been playing for Hansa since July 2022, scored two goals for Rostock in 29 second division games. He previously played for Hannover 96, Hamburger SV and VfL Bochum, among others. In the current season, the Austrian last played for FC Hansa on October 29th in the 0-1 defeat against Wehen Wiesbaden. In total he only made seven short appearances. As part of the squad slimming down, midfielder Joshua Krüger will also initially return fully to Rostock’s U23 squad.
The situation near Osnabrück is slowly becoming hopeless
The situation in the table is threatening for the Rostock professional team, and for Osnabrück it is even starting to become hopeless. Hansa goes into the duel with the purple-whites from 16th place with 20 points, who are at the bottom with only eleven points and the weakest offense (18 goals).

Hansa coach Mersad Selimbegovic sees the tense situation at the bottom of the table as a danger. “If someone has nothing left to lose, then it can be really dangerous,” said the 41-year-old. “It’s going to be a heated game. I can already tell that.”
According to Selimbegovic, fans of high-class football probably won’t get their money’s worth on Sunday: “I can’t imagine that there could be a football treat or anything else.”
VfL coach Koschinat doesn’t want to play with nerves
His Osnabrück coaching colleague Uwe Koschinat said that everyone in his team obviously knew the starting position. “With every game in which we didn’t get a three-pointer and in the end we only talked about a good performance, our goal obviously becomes more difficult.” Nevertheless, his team should not “turn the game into such a nerve-wracking game from the first second.”
The 52-year-old praised the upcoming opponent as “one of the physically strongest teams in the league”. At Hansa, “basically every throw-in in the box means stress.”
