An Oregon father has been charged with drugging his daughter’s friends with shakes laced with sedatives during a sleepover party, police say. Michael Meyden, 57, turned himself in to authorities after a grand jury indicted him on multiple felonies and misdemeanors related to the incident that took place in August 2023.
According to police, one of the three 12-year-old girls texted her mother in distress at 1:45 a.m. after losing consciousness and feeling unsafe at Meyden’s home in Lake Oswego, just south of Portland. The text message pleaded for her mother to pick her up and fabricate a family emergency as an excuse.
Meyden allegedly mixed benzodiazepine, a depressant that slows the nervous system, into mango smoothies that were served to the young girls. As they fell asleep, he reportedly crawled on them, leaving the girls vulnerable and in a state of distress.
Authorities have not speculated on a motive for Meyden’s actions. The incident has sparked shock and outrage in the community, and parents are understandably concerned for the safety of their children.
Meyden’s arrest and the disturbing details of the case have left many questioning the boundaries of trust and safety in situations where children are left in the care of others. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to uncover more information about the incident.
Parents are reminded to be vigilant and cautious when allowing their children to attend sleepovers or events away from home, and to always prioritize their safety and well-being.
