Federal Judge Denies “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera’s Request for Calls and Visits in Prison
New York: A federal judge in New York has denied Mexican drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera’s requests for calls and family visits while serving his life sentence in the United States. The denial comes as Guzmán Loera sought to restore calls with his 12-year-old twin daughters and visits from them and his wife at the maximum security prison in Colorado where he is currently held.
The judge informed Guzmán Loera that the Bureau of Prisons is solely responsible for the conditions of his solitary confinement at the Administrative Maximum Facility (ADX) prison in Florence. The judge’s decision came in response to a motion filed by “El Chapo” on March 20, seeking to reinstate the two 15-minute calls he had a month with his daughters, which were canceled in May 2023.
The judge reiterated that the court does not have the power to alter the conditions imposed by the Bureau of Prisons and noted that calls and visits granted to Guzmán Loera during his trial in 2019 were replaced after its conclusion.
According to Guzmán Loera, the canceled calls were due to “unprecedented discrimination” against him. He highlighted that the calls are the only means of contact he has with his daughters, who live in Mexico and are unable to visit him due to visa restrictions.
Guzmán Loera’s wife, Emma Coronel, residing in California, was released from prison last year after serving a sentence for drug trafficking and money laundering.
The former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel expressed his disappointment over the denial of his request, emphasizing the importance of maintaining communication with his loved ones during his incarceration.
