Kalehe: victims deplore chaotic distribution of humanitarian aid

Radio Okapi/Ph. Emmanuel ELAMEJI of Kabedi”/>

The victims of the floods of Kalehe in Nyamukubi regretted, this Sunday, May 14, that the distribution of humanitarian aid was done in a rather chaotic way.

Some of them explained to Radio Okapi that the bulk of the aid is sometimes focused mainly on Bushushu, sometimes diverted.

The provincial management committee for this disaster admits its overflow.

The administrator of the Kalehe territory, Thomas Bakenga, who is part of this committee, regrets that the proposal to entrust the responsibility for the distribution of this aid to a specialized structure was not accepted.

He indicates that the distribution is currently being done “in an unordered way, now the consequences on the sites, there are victims who are quarreling, fighting”.

Thomas Bakenga also deplored the influx of residents from non-affected areas to the distribution site.

Thus, the administrator of Kalehe reiterates the request to the victims to gather on the new site to facilitate the distribution of this aid intended for them.

Indeed, the survivors are reluctant to leave the scene of the disaster to reach the site designated by the authorities for their relocation.

This Sunday, May 14, a boat loaded with 8 tons of food and non-food left Bukavu for the village of Nyamukubi in Kalehe to assist the victims.

It is a charitable work of the Christians of the “Ya Kesho Yajuwa Mungu” Group.

On site, the benefactors carried out the distribution themselves.

A gesture that the victims of Nyamukubi appreciated.

The UN humanitarian coordinator in the DRC, Bruno Lemarquis, spoke on Friday, May 12 during a meeting with the government, of the need for good coordination of all interventions on the ground in order to provide an effective response to come to effective aid to the thousands of victims.
