A fire broke out on Tuesday March 19 in the evening at the morgue of the university clinics in Kisangani, capital of the Tshopo province.
According to sources close to this hospital, a short circuit in the administrative offices of the morgue was the cause of this fire.
This short circuit would be caused by the overheating of the generator which supplies the University Clinics with electricity.
This generator is being used to its maximum capacity following the lack of electricity in the city of Kisangani.
Still according to the same sources, the fire was brought under control thanks to the intervention of firefighters from Kisangani town hall. But first, young people present at the scene of the incident intervened by tearing down the doors of certain administrative offices in order to prevent the spread of the fire.
Only a few administrative offices of the morgue were consumed by the flames, the cold room which is used to preserve the bodies was spared.
In the city of Kisangani, electricity has become a rare commodity for several years following recurring breakdowns on the electricity networks of the National Electricity Company (SNEL).
The Special Fund for the Reparation of Compensation for Victims (FRIVAO) recently announced that it had made nine million US dollars available to SNEL for the rehabilitation of electricity in the capital of the Tshopo province.
