Man who beat a dog blinded goes to prison

A guarantee control judge issued a restraining order against a man accused of attacking his pet and his puppies in La Guajira.

According to agents of the Special Group to Fight Animal Abuse (Gelma), the subject caused serious physical damage to the dogs, for which he must respond for the crime of aggravated animal abuse.

The authorities identified the aggressor as Ángel Alfonso Leyva Flórez, who allegedly hit him with a bat and dragged his dog with her four puppies to a bush, because it allegedly bit him.

The unfortunate event occurred on November 28, 2023, in the middle of a public road in Riohacha, La Guajira.

The Prosecutor’s Office indicated that the animal suffered serious injuries to its eyes, so the community urgently transferred it to a veterinary clinic. However, veterinarians could not do much due to the severity of the injuries, which caused him to lose his vision.

Despite this, the dog was adopted by an animal project, which was in charge of the rehabilitation and recovery process, and named her ‘Yuli’. During the judicial proceedings, Leyva Flórez accepted the charge that was brought against him by the Prosecutor’s Office.
