Cuban Doctors Reportedly Killed in Bombing in Somalia
The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (@CubaMINREX) has tweeted that unofficial sources have reported the death of Cuban doctors, Dr. Assel Herrera Correa and Dr. Landy Rodríguez Hernández, in a bombing last Thursday, February 15. The doctors were kidnapped in the community of Mandera, Kenya, on April 12, 2019.
The Ministry’s tweet stated, “So far, this information has not been confirmed. In this regard, the Cuban authorities remain in permanent communication with their Kenyan and Somali counterparts, and our people will be immediately informed.”
The terrorist group responsible for the kidnapping released a statement on Telegram claiming that the incident occurred in Somalia during a drone attack carried out by the United States in the city of Jilib, Lower Juba region. However, no official source in Somalia has confirmed this news.
Assel Herrera and Landy Rodríguez were part of a medical mission that provided services in rural areas of Kenya when they were kidnapped in 2019. Despite efforts to achieve their release, the attempts have been unsuccessful.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated that they are in contact with Kenyan and Somali authorities and will provide updates as soon as more information becomes available.
