The widow of Fabrizio Bortolin, who lost his life at the Molinetto: “Many unfulfilled promises and now only absolute silence”

REFRONTOLO. On the evening of 2 August 7 years ago. A water bomb strikes with all its power against the hills of Refrontolo, overflows the Lierza, which in a few moments, at Molinetto della Croda, sweeps away people, structures, cars.

Four dead, at least twenty wounded. Maurizio Lot, 50, collaborator of the Pro loco of Refrontolo, Luciano Stella, 50, tire dealer from Pieve di Soligo, Giannino Breda, 60, from Falzè di Piave, Fabrizio Bortolin, 48, from Santa Lucia di Piave, lose their lives. Who remembers them today? Nobody, “absolutely nobody” admits Michela Biz Da Re, Fabrizio’s wife, bitterly. “I certainly have not forgotten, not even my 9-year-old daughter, who always asks me to be taken to where her father died, but I don’t feel like it” emphasizes the lady.

On Sunday at 9.30, in the parish church of Ponte della Priula, Fr Andrea Forest, chaplain and director of the Social and Labor Pastoral, celebrated the mass in which Bortolin will be remembered. Croda sentenced last year the Court of Appeal of Venice establishing the acquittals for Valter Scapol, the president of the local Pro Loco, the architects Annalisa Romitelli (at the time responsible for the technical office of the Municipality), Leopoldo Saccon and the geologist Celeste Granziera (the latter two were the technicians of Tepco, the firm that dealt with the consultancy for the technical drafting of the Pat), who ended up in trial on charges of culpable disaster. A new legal action is underway undertaken by the relatives of Luciano Stella.

The human error would lie in the underestimation of the risk by the subjects present at the party, who would have continued, according to the judges, to neglect the progressive increase in the water level until the moment they found themselves trapped on the platform inside the shed.

“But I wonder why, beyond this sentence, our dead have been completely forgotten. On the occasion of the tragedy and on the first anniversary, many expressed promises of support, launched initiatives in memory; many beautiful speeches, and for at least 5 years there has been absolute silence – says Ms. Michela Biz Da Re – luckily I did not wait for any of these promises, I rolled up my sleeves, found a job and raised my daughter. But human behavior left a lot to be desired ». No ceremony, in fact, on the occasion of the seventh anniversary. “It seems that the watchword is: forget” the widow notes bitterly. –
