Dortmund. The end of the negative series is said to have only been the beginning of the comeback for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. “We still have pressure, it hasn’t gone away,” said captain and goalkeeper Oliver Baumann after the surprising 3:2 (1:2) win at runner-up Borussia Dortmund. “But I hope that we can create an atmosphere that can lead to a turnaround. We now have to keep scoring points.” The Kraichgauers want to improve as quickly as possible against Werder Bremen next Sunday.

After failing to win eight times in a row in the Bundesliga, TSG moved within four points of the European Cup places thanks to their coup at BVB. “For me, a win like this is a momentum changer,” said coach Pellegrino Matarazzo. “I said a few weeks ago that if it’s going to turn around, then it’s going to turn right because we’re working on it.” This time the team finally rewarded themselves again.
After the dream start and the early lead by Ihlas Bebou (2nd minute), TSG fell behind in the first half on Sunday evening. Donyell Malen (21st) and Nico Schlotterbeck (25th) scored for Dortmund. In the second half, however, Borussia lost the thread. Maximilian Beier (61st/64th) turned things around with a double strike – in the game, but perhaps also in what has been such a dreary competitive game year for Hoffenheim.

“Hopefully this will give us a boost,” said defender Florian Grillitsch, who received the ball in the penalty area in the final phase. However, there was no penalty for Dortmund and no further setback for TSG. “How we fought as a team, how united we are outside and how we stayed on our path,” is how goalkeeper Baumann described the last tricky few weeks. “I’m really overjoyed and we can be proud of it.” dpa
