US forces have stepped up operations in Yemen and off the coast of the war-torn country, saying they want to protect shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden from Houthi attacks.

The military “carried out a self-defense attack on two drones loaded with explosives” around 1:30 a.m. Belgian time on Tuesday, the US Military Command for the Middle East (Centcom) said on X.

U.S. forces “identified” these drones in “Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen” and considered them “a potential threat to U.S. Navy and merchant vessels,” it said.

Armistice

The Houthi rebels, who say they are acting in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza, have carried out several drone and rocket attacks on Israel since the war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7. Since November, they have also carried out attacks against ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, key passages for global trade.

A British ship sailing in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen was damaged by a drone attack on Monday. This is reported by a security company specialized in international shipping.

According to the company Ambrey, the “port side” of the British cargo ship, which flew the flag of Barbados, suffered “minor damage” in the drone strike.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in the Middle East to try to broker a truce in the war between Israel and Palestinian Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
