The work of the Board of Directors of the Lakos Water Basin Agency was held this morning, Tuesday, March 5, at the headquarters of the Tangier-Asilah Prefecture, headed by Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water, and in the presence of a number of high-ranking figures, including the Governor of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, Governor of the Tangier-Asilah Prefecture. The president of the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, elected by the region, and the executives of the Ministry of Equipment and Water.

This meeting was devoted, according to the ministry’s report, to inventory the agency’s accounts for the fiscal year 2022, present a work program and its draft budget for the fiscal year 2024, and determine the progress of completing the 2023 budget.

In his opening speech, Nizar Baraka stressed the importance of accelerating the pace of completion of programmed water projects, especially accelerating the dams that are in the process of being completed, and continuing the implementation of projects to connect water basins, national programs for seawater desalination and the use of treated wastewater, and improving the water economy.

The Minister stressed the completion of a group of projects during the past year in the Lakkous Basin, with future aspirations that include diverting the water from the Wadi El Makhzen Dam to the Dar Akhroufa Dam, establishing a seawater desalination plant to supply Tangier with potable water, starting to install floating pumps at the dam level, and accelerating the completion of the Dam. Ghais and Ayasha Dam, in addition to programming 3 small dams in the region.

Regarding the agency’s influence, Baraka revealed the water deficit in the past and current hydrological year, which negatively affected the volume of imports at the level of dams in the basin. Specifically, the filling rate of dam injections in the basin on March 5, 2024 of this year was 42.7%, compared to 59.4% on the same day last year.

In conclusion, the Minister stressed the necessity of continuing to implement structured programs and accelerating the completion of water projects to meet the needs of citizens and enhance environmental sustainability and economic development in the region.
