In 1962, astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth. On that occasion, NASA, the US space agency, used computers for the first time. Glenn, who was also an engineer, wanted the calculations to be verified by the most capable person, which in this case was the mathematician Katherine Johnson, of the Virgin.
