Sardinia is repopulated with griffon vultures, 21 specimens from Spain – News

The process of repopulating the griffon vulture in Sardinia, the main objective of the LIFE Safe for Vultures project, comes to life. As the release of the first contingent of animals, which arrived a year ago from Spain, approaches, another 21 griffins have landed in Porto Torres and will contribute to the reconstitution of the permanent colony in the south of the island.

The release of the first 16, after the adaptation period in the aviary built in Villasalto, in the woodland construction site managed by Forestas in southern Sardinia, will take place in April. At that point, the young griffon vultures that , who left Barcelona, have been guests of the Bonassai wildlife recovery center in Sassari for a few days.
LIFE Safe for Vultures wants to replicate throughout the island the results achieved in north-west Sardinia with LIFE Under Griffon Wings: starting from the only native colony surviving in Italy, according to the latest census the number has reached almost 400 specimens. Of the 21 newly arrived griffons, one was born in captivity in the Mallorca zoo, while the others were found in difficulty, recovered and rehabilitated in the Amus center in Villafranca de los Barros, province of Badajoz, in Extremadura. Born in 2023, they are 7 males and 14 females. The group will be joined by a griffon vulture born in captivity in France, which has been in Bonassai for a few weeks already. Like those now ready for liberation, they will participate in the repopulation plan to encourage the return of the griffon vulture to an area where it historically had a home and carried out important eco-systemic functions, becoming extinct after the Second World War.
