Several members of the Judicial Council propose the dismissal of Ján Mazák from the position of its chairman — what does this mean according to Eugene Korda | | .a week

several members of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic propose the dismissal of Ján Mazák from the position of its chairman. They argue that it is a gross misuse of the function for unauthorized collection of information against judges. The proponents informed about it on the website pravvelisty.sk.

“Ján Mazák ‘appropriated’ the competences of the Judicial Council as a collective body, or the control commissions of the Judicial Council, and misused the search section of the Judicial Council as his private detective service, which, according to his illegal instructions, collected information on selected judges,” claim the petitioners.

Among other things, they talk about instructions to check the judge’s financial situation right after she decided to ground the helicopter of the Slovak Ministry of the Interior. “Or we can mention the case where the chairman of the judicial council was involved in a relationship with a female judge who ‘happened’ to be the daughter of a well-known lawyer, or the case in which the chairman of the judicial council unlawfully hunted information on his opinion opponent in the judicial council through the Office of Special the prosecutor’s office and the police,” they pointed out.

Its members Marcela Kosová, Peter Šamko, Ayše Pružinec Eren, Dana Jelínková Dudzíková, Marián Fečík, Ludmila Joanidisová and Martin Bezák signed the proposal to remove Mazák from the position of the President of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic. The possible dismissal of Mazák from the post of chairman would not mean the loss of the position of a member of the Judicial Council of the Slovak Republic.

Mazák faced a motion to remove him from the head of the Judicial Council at the end of 2023. At that time, nine members of the council voted for the motion, which was not enough for his removal. Three members then abstained from voting, three were against.

.explanation of Eugene Korda:

It was only a matter of time before this government, through judges favorably disposed to them, would try to remove the chairman of the Judicial Council, Ján Mazák. It is just another step in paralyzing our legal system and controlling the independence of the courts. Ján Mazák, the former President of the Constitutional Court, demonstrated his competence and independence as the President of the Judicial Council. This can be fatal for him, because these qualities do not belong to the ranking of values of this government coalition.
