South Tyrol: Schuler withdraws from the race for the new council – News

The outgoing agriculture councilor of the Province of Bolzano, Arnold Schuler, withdraws from the race for a place in the new provincial council and thus paves the way for his party colleague and former deputy mayor of Bolzano Luis Walcher to join the executive. The SVP parliament will meet tomorrow afternoon to approve en bloc – on the proposal of the president of the Province Arno Kompatscher – the composition of the council and the agriculture department was in fact the last big issue.

Schuler, in a note released in the evening by the SVP, retraces his ten years in the provincial government, a period “characterised by the pandemic, the debate on pesticides and overtourism, the negotiations for the implementation of the common agricultural policy and the question of large carnivores”.

The outgoing councillor, always considered very close to governor Kompatscher, highlights the positive measures undertaken during his mandate, the effects of which “will be evident in the coming years”.

“I have always tried to take the necessary decisions in a balanced way, in the general interest, not without resistance”, he reiterates.

Schuler also recalls the decline in support he suffered in the October 22 elections and reiterates that he has “never made any request to run”. “In recent days there have been heated discussions about my person and resistance from the Farmers’ Union. To avoid damage to the party and a split within the agricultural world, I have decided to withdraw my availability for a position in the future executive I have already informed the governor and the party secretary of my decision.”
