When the Long March started, every three Red Army commanders and fighters had a rifle, each with less than 50 rounds of ammunition; after the Battle of the Xiangjiang River, there was not much ammunition left in the army. From January to March 1935, the Red Army crossed the Chishui River four times. In the freezing cold, the Red Army soldiers wore ragged military uniforms, marching rapidly day and night between the mountains, forests, and rivers of Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou, and they used a pair of soleplates to push the encircling Kuomintang troops far behind them.
