This was the third demonstration against the extreme right in Hamburg since the beginning of the year. Such marches have also taken place regularly in other German cities in recent months.
At least twelve protests were also planned in as many cities on Sunday. Thousands of people also took to the streets in the capital Berlin, Dresden, Zwisckau, Bautzen, Görlitz and Meissen.
The protests are a response to the controversial meeting between AfD politicians and neo-Nazis in Potsdam in November. During that meeting, the “remigration” and therefore deportation of migrants and minorities would have been discussed. The meeting also included a number of members of the German Christian Democrats of CDU, the party of former Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is now in opposition.
