ROME. «The bomb that was detonated in Piazza della Loggia on the morning of May 28, 1974 was supposed to kill, sow fear, frighten the democratic forces. The civil conscience and the maturity of the main social, trade union and political forces formed a barrier in defense of our democracy and our civilization ». Words of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in memory of the Brescia massacre. That device, he says, “was a link in that black chain of terror that claimed to threaten civil coexistence and constitutional rights, making Italy bloodied”. But “Brescia and the whole country responded with firmness and unity, opposing the solidarity of the people to the inhumanity of the terrorists.”
From then to today – continues the Head of State – «the Republic’s path has been able to continue in the affirmation of its values, of the achievements, of participation. Terrorisms have all been defeated ». On this day of remembrance, the thoughts of Mattarella and of the whole of Italy, “go to the victims of that terrible massacre, to those who have borne its wounds over time, to the pain of family members that no one will ever be able to erase. Memory calls for a commitment to witness, addressed above all to the youngest. An example of this was the action of the families of the victims who, united in association and with strong support from the community, kept their attention focused on an accomplished search for the truth about the perpetrators of the attack “.
