Central Fifth Ecological Environmental Protection Inspection Team Identifies Gaps in Qinghai Province’s Ecological Protection Measures

Xining, February 26 (Xinhua) – The Central Fifth Ecological Environmental Protection Inspection Team presented their findings to Qinghai Province on the 26th, revealing significant gaps in the province’s efforts to build a highland of ecological civilization. While progress has been made in protecting and restoring natural ecology and combating pollution, there is still work to be done to align with General Secretary Xi Jinping’s directives on ecological protection in Qinghai.

The inspection revealed that some local authorities and departments have a limited understanding of the importance of ecological preservation in Qinghai, leading to weak implementation of environmental protection responsibilities. The exploitation of salt lake resources in the Qaidam Basin has been haphazard, further damaging the fragile ecosystem. Additionally, the cleanup of small hydropower projects has been slow, and illegal activities like land reclamation continue to threaten the region’s ecological balance.

Furthermore, Qinghai Province faces challenges in implementing the ecological protection and high-quality development strategy in the Yellow River Basin. Issues with water resource management, urban sewage treatment, and ecological protection at Qinghai Lake persist. The inspectors also noted irregularities in energy consumption and hazardous waste disposal.

In response to these findings, the inspection team called for Qinghai Province to redouble its efforts in implementing Xi Jinping’s ecological civilization ideology and prioritize ecological protection and high-quality development initiatives. Specific recommendations included enforcing stricter water resource regulations, improving ecological protection measures at Qinghai Lake, and cracking down on illegal breeding practices.

Qinghai Province has already taken steps to address the issues highlighted in the inspection report. By the end of December 2023, the province had resolved all 1,192 reported issues, taken enforcement actions against numerous companies, and held individuals accountable for their environmental violations.

Moving forward, Qinghai Province has pledged to continue its work towards achieving a sustainable and environmentally friendly future. By heeding the recommendations of the inspection team and prioritizing ecological protection efforts, Qinghai aims to build a model ecological civilization in the region.
