How can I contribute by cycling to ensure that our waste does not continue to destroy the environment? And can a valuable new bicycle be made from seemingly worthless waste? In short: How do the two major sustainability issues of waste or rubbish and sustainable mobility, especially cycling, fit together? There will be surprising answers to these and other questions on June 3, 2023 from 4 p.m. in a special lecture at the Chemnitz Children’s University. “We will not only use the largest lecture hall at Chemnitz University of Technology for this, but also part of the campus square in front of the central lecture hall building and the Weinhold building,” reveals Brita Jacob, head of the Chemnitz Children’s University.

First, Prof. Dr. Marlen Gabriele Arnold and Dr. Katja Beyer from the project team “CYCLING” at the Professorship of Business Administration – Corporate Environmental Economics and Sustainability at Chemnitz University of Technology and Jana Kindt, Head of the Prevention Service at the Chemnitz Police Headquarters, will design the joint special lecture in room N 115 of the central lecture hall building. “There you not only learn exciting facts about the topic of garbage, but also tips for safe behavior when cycling on the road. In addition, POLDI, the police dinosaur and child policeman of the Saxony police will be present and will welcome the children,” says Jacob.

Afterwards, the junior students are invited together with their parents and grandparents to the activity area in front of the central lecture hall building and the Weinhold building. There, anyone who wants to can take part in two outdoor bike courses run by the Verkehrswacht Stadt Chemnitz e. V., learn interesting facts about environmentally friendly cycling in everyday life, take part in exciting painting, handicraft and puzzle activities and experience the police up close. The Landesverkehrswacht Sachsen e. V. from Dresden will be on campus that day and will use various simulators and devices such as a crash and a motorcycle simulator to address the topics of road safety and accident avoidance in road traffic.

The special lecture at the Chemnitz Children’s University will take place on a special day this year, as June 3, 2023 is also European Bicycle Day and World Bicycle Day. Introduced in 1998, it aims to draw attention around the world to the fact that the bicycle is one of the most environmentally friendly and healthiest means of transport. For this reason, the junior students are cordially invited, together with their parents and grandparents, to cycle to the campus on Reichenhainer Straße on this day – this way the various attractions of the police and traffic guards can also be experienced on your own bike. On the way to the campus, you can also use the first Chemnitz bicycle street on Reichenhainer Straße as well as the numerous bicycle racks on campus to park your bicycles.

The special lecture at the Chemnitz Children’s University is part of the “TUCtag” – the “Day of the University” – and therefore begins later than usual. Registration is not required, admission is free.
