The trial began and the defense’s objections were rejected by the judges of the Court of Appeal. Fifty witnesses will parade in court

VITTORIO VENETO. First hearing in the trial that sees Patrizia Armellin and Angelica Cormaci, the two women accused of the murder of Paolo Vaj, 57, from Milan, on the night between 18 and 19 July last in the stand. house in via Cal dei Romani in Borgo Olarigo, on the hills of Vittorio Veneto. Yesterday’s, which ended shortly after 2 pm, was a purely technical hearing during which the lawyers of the two defendants, lawyers Stefania Giribaldi and Marina Manfredi, reiterated the objections raised in the preliminary hearing in the courtroom.

The two lawyers used strong expressions at the hearing such as “rights of defense of suspects trampled” during the investigation. In particular for not having been able to attend, as lawyers, the surveys of any traces of blood in the place of the tragedy with luminol by the Ris and the searches carried out by the carabinieri. They also spoke of “superficial investigations” and “one-sided”. But in the end the judges of the Court of Assizes rejected the objections presented by the defense.

In the trial, Paolo Vaj’s second wife, Roberta Bencini, filed a civil action with the lawyer Gentile Nicodemo (replaced yesterday by her colleague Daica Rometta). “It is premature to talk about compensation – explained the lawyer, the lawyer Rometta – we wait before the trial takes its course”.

But it is clear that if there will be compensation, everything will concern the large insurance policy that Vaj had made out to his partner Patrizia Armellin. A sum of over 400 thousand euros, the result of a large inheritance. The witnesses who will alternate before the judges during the trial will be about fifty.

Thirty for the defense and twenty for the prosecution. In this regard, the lawyer of the civil party, during the hearing, also raised an objection regarding the numerous consultants that the defense will hear during the trial without communicating the topics on which they will focus. But the judges admitted the advice and then reserved the course of the proceedings whether to hear them or not.

The accusation of the public minister Romanelli against the two women is of premeditated voluntary murder and aggravated by the impaired defense of the victim, by the emotional relationship and cohabitation and by the fact of having acted at night. During yesterday’s hearing, the prosecutor clearly stated in the courtroom that “the crucial point of the trial will come from the computer media.”

The two women allegedly attacked Vaj while he was in a serious state of alcoholic alteration. An aspect that led the prosecutor to affirm that Patrizia and Angelica would have made him drink, with the intention of being able to implement their murderous plan.

Patrizia Armellin and Angelica Cormaci had admitted to having attacked Paolo Vaj on two different occasions, albeit claiming that they had done so in self-defense. First Angelica would have hit the victim in the temple with a wooden stick, then the young Sicilian, helped by her Victorian friend, would have crushed a pillow on Vaj’s face, until he suffocated.

For the defense, however, Vaj would have died of a heart attack following an epileptic attack from which he had been suffering for some time.
