VfB Lübeck pulled off a surprise in the third division on Saturday. The relegation candidate beat second-placed Jahn Regensburg 1-0 (1-0).

The gap to a non-relegation place is still six points after the 30th matchday. But after the premiere victory in 2024, there is hope again at Lohmühle.

In the first game after parting ways with coach Florian Schnorrenberg, the Schleswig-Holsteiners, under the direction of Bastian Reinhardt, showed significant improvement, especially defensively. Although the promotion candidate had more possession of the ball, there were no clear chances before the break.

The Lübeckers appeared more dangerous in their few attacks. Therefore the early lead was not undeserved. Robin Velasco scored with a low shot in the twelfth minute. Shortly before the break, Jan-Marc Schneider ran alone towards the Regensburg goal. After a long sprint, however, he lacked the strength and concentration to finish well. Jahn keeper Felix Gebhardt parried with his foot.

Lübeck’s defense is good

There was no reason for the hosts to change their direction in the second half. They remained compact and put a lot of effort into the duels. Regensburg could do next to nothing with their possession of the ball. Many attacks got stuck well in front of the penalty area.

It wasn’t until the 88th minute that Lübeck goalkeeper Patrick Klewin had to really intervene with a long-range shot. Nothing more came from the favorite offensively.
