The blockbuster film ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, directed by Bollywood’s famous filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is still alive in the hearts of fans even after decades due to its story, songs and filmmaking. Wale actor Salman Khan faced a lot of difficulties to give it true color.
Senior cinematographer Anil Mehta, who worked in Sanjay Leela’s films ‘Khamoshi’ and ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’, has shared an interesting incident.
In an interview with film magazine ‘Film Companion’, Anil Mehta revealed how Salman Khan’s spontaneity gave a real touch to a scene in the film’s song ‘Tarap Tarap Ke Iss Dil Se’.
Reminiscing about shooting the song in a hot desert, Anil said: ‘I remember Salman was the only one who could do this in a hot desert otherwise which hero would lie in the hot sand and ask people to pour sand on him. He was asking to do it himself.’
Talking about Salman Khan’s spontaneity, he added, ‘I took the camera off the tripod and then I was with Salman at that moment.
‘I got involved in what they were doing and later turned the camera towards Sooraj, who was on Joban at the time. Today it is normal. But, that was the strength of his performance and then of course Sanjay Leela also had a hand in this masterpiece.
‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ was released in 1999. The subject of the film was a love triangle between the characters of Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Ajay Devgn.

Anil won the National Film Award for Best Cinematography for his exceptional work in ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’.
Later he also acted in famous films like ‘Lagaan’, ‘Veer Zaara’, ‘Kul Ho Na Ho’, ‘Rock Star’ and ‘Highway’.
Recently he is a part of Bhumi Pednekar’s new project ‘Thank you for coming’.
