A bit of a shock for Yara Declercq (21) from Avelgem on Monday morning: her Volkswagen Polo was stolen in broad daylight from the parking lot of Okay in Vichte where she has a student job. “I’ve only had it since December and I saved up for it all by myself,” says Yara. “A customer stole the keys and my bank cards from my locker.”
Yara Declercq is a student, but regularly works at Okay van Vichte. “On Monday I worked a shift from 7 to 12 hours, but when I wanted to leave, my car keys were missing from my handbag,” says Yara. “I thought I might have left them in the car, but in the parking lot they turned out to be gone.”
“I went back into the store in a panic. I immediately reported it to the bosses, contacted the police and viewed the camera footage with the security guard. While I was waiting, I discovered that the bank cards from my purse had also been stolen. The theft must therefore have happened between 10 and 12 o’clock. I have a break at 9.30 am and then I bought something with my bank card.”
Toilet
“On the camera images we saw a female customer go upstairs during that time and stay away for more than fifteen minutes. If people want to go to the toilet, we usually allow them. We don’t want to be a bogeyman. Unfortunately, this will not have been a toilet visit. I have a permanent locker in the store, but it cannot be locked.”
“That customer must have taken my keys and bank cards. I even remember someone who had difficulty paying at the cash register next to me. I think the thief tried to pay with my bank cards in the store.”
“I really hope that the police find my car soon. It is a dark blue Volkswagen Polo with striking gray mirror caps. I’ve only had it since the beginning of December and saved up for it myself.”
