The second day of the 2024 Australian Open saw some surprising upsets and victories as the competition heated up in Melbourne. Chinese player Zhang Zhizhen marked a “good start” by defeating Argentina’s Coria 3:0, earning his first victory in the tournament.

In the men’s singles, Zhang Zhizhen secured his win with a score of 6:4, 7:6 (3) and 7:6 (5), reaching the second round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career. However, Chilean star Jarry, seeded 18th in the tournament, suffered a disappointing 2:3 loss to Italian player Coboli. Russian star Medvedev, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, advanced to the second round after his opponent, French qualifier Atman, retired in the fourth set due to cramps in his right leg. Canadian veteran Raonic also faced challenges, calling a medical timeout in the first set and retiring shortly after the start of the third set due to hip discomfort.

In the women’s singles, US Open champion Gauff and Wimbledon runner-up Jabba Uhl both secured their victories in straight sets, advancing easily to the next round. However, two-time Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka suffered a disappointing 0:2 loss to No. 16 seed and French star Garcia, while No. 7 seed and Wimbledon champion Vondrousova was also eliminated after losing 0:2 to Ukrainian player Yastremska.

The 2024 Australian Open is already proving to be an unpredictable and exciting tournament, with more action to come in the following days.
