Bundesliga: But new successor? Nübel extends his contract with FC Bayern until 2029

As of: April 12, 2024 10:51 a.m

FC Bayern is planning the future in the goalkeeper position: Alexander Nübel signs a long-term contract with FC Bayern. However, the 27-year-old is waiting far away from Säbener Straße for Manuel Neuer’s possible career end.

Now it’s clear: FC Bayern and Alexander Nübel seem to be convinced that Nübel can be the starting goalkeeper of the future for Munich. The club and players agreed on an early contract extension until 2029, as the club announced on Friday (April 12). This underlines Nübel’s claim to be Manuel Neuer’s successor at FC Bayern.

But Nübel won’t wait in Munich for the long-time number one’s career to end. The 27-year-old, who is on loan at VfB Stuttgart this season, will stay with the Swabians for another two years. Nübel’s contract in Munich would have expired in 2025 – as did that of the Munich captain. It is still unclear whether Neuer will actually stop and end his career in 2025. The two-year term of the Nübel loan could be an indication of a further extension.

Eberl: “Excellently positioned in the goalkeeper position”

“I am very happy about this decision and the trust that FC Bayern has placed in me. At the same time, I feel very comfortable in Stuttgart. I want to be successful with VfB and take the next steps personally,” said Nübel in a press release quoted by the club.

Sports director Max Eberl praised the 27-year-old’s development: “He has developed excellently in recent years and is one of the best German goalkeepers. FC Bayern has the goalkeeper position with Manuel Neuer, Sven Ulreich, Daniel Peretz and Alexander Nübel excellently positioned today and in the future.”

Numerous interested parties for Nübel

Nübel is playing a good season in Stuttgart and is partly responsible for the fact that the Swabians are currently tied for third place in the table with the Munich team. Clubs like Sporting Lisbon and AS Roma are said to have followed the keeper’s development with interest and prepared offers. FC Bayern still seems to be convinced that Nübel has the potential to assert himself at Säbener Straße at some point.

Not an easy start for Nübel at FC Bayern

But the relationship between Alexander Nübel and FC Bayern was not always easy. Ex-FC Bayern official Hasan Salihamidzic lured the 27-year-old to Munich in 2020 as a potential successor to Manuel Neuer.

The then 23-year-old FC Schalke 04 keeper came to the Isar on a free transfer and was expected to succeed the German national goalkeeper in the not too distant future. However, no one at FC Bayern wanted to know anything about the guarantee that Nübel was said to have received.

In his first season in Munich, the young goalkeeper only made four competitive appearances and had to realize that there was no getting past the record champions’ number one goal. Neuer is still in the box four years later.

Via Monaco to Stuttgart

For Nübel, who didn’t want to waste time on the bench, he went to AS Monaco instead, where he was on loan as a regular goalkeeper (2021 to 2023) between the posts, although he was not permanently signed. After some disagreements with FC Bayern, the next stop in the current season was at VfB Stuttgart, where Nübel performed well. With the Swabians he is currently surprisingly level on points with FC Bayern in third place in the Bundesliga table. Also because of Nübel’s performance – he has kept 12 clean sheets so far this season – Stuttgart will probably qualify for the Champions League.
