London, July 26, 2021 – I. Covid infections, accelerated by the Delta variant, are scary all over the world (in Indonesia as many as 100 children die a week). But strangely in the UK the rush of the damn virus seems down: for the sixth consecutive day – and in spite of the reopening strongly desired by the premier Boris Johnson – there are fewer cases than the previous day.
In the last 24 hours – for example – they have been recorded 24. 950 almost, while Sunday they had been 29.173, below the psychological threshold of 30 thousand cases from 6 July, definitely below the peak of about 50 thousand cases registered shortly before Freedom Day, a week ago, when almost all of the remaining anti-Covid bans were lifted.

In short, data that seem to contradict forecasts and give hope that the peak of the third wave has been exceeded. The British government and its scientific advisers estimated a surge to at least for the autumn 100 thousand cases a day, with Neil Ferguson, head of the Scientific Council, who did not even rule out 200 thousand cases a day.

Some scientists point out that the 8% drop in testing could explain “in part” the decrease. However, the phenomenon would have behind numerous factors, from the heat wave to the large number of infections and vaccinations that would have brought the country closer to herd immunity.

The last five-day streak of declining numbers was in February, shortly after the UK passed the peak of the winter wave. It must be said that the consequences of Freedom Day are still not seen and we will have to wait a few more days to register them. The figure for Sunday was, however, of 40% lower than the previous Sunday and it marked the first time that numbers have dropped substantially since early May. Note that in both previous waves, Britain had brought down cases with lockdown measures; this time the government has relied instead on vaccinations and indeed has relaxed the latest restrictions instead of implementing them.
