Milan-Cortina 2026: Foundation on track to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions

The initiative, promoted by United Nations in partnership with the International Olympic Committee (That is) to contribute to the implementation of the Paris agreements signed in 2015, aims to make a difference in achieving the neutrality of greenhouse gas emissions.

As mentioned, a fundamental week for the entire international community kicks off in Milan. From 28 September to 2 October there will be days dedicated to discussions on the central themes of the environment and climate. Youth4Climate and Pre-Cop26 will be the 2 events that will mark the approach to Cop26, the annual climate conference organized by the UN in 1 month in Glaasgow (last chance to reduce greenhouse gas emissions) and that this year will see the direct involvement of the Italian government, a strong promoter of Youth4Climate.

The sustainability of Milan-Cortina 2026

The Milano-Cortina 2026 Foundation puts sustainability at the center of the Road to the Games of the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games to be held in 5 years between Lombardy and Veneto. The United Nations Framework aims to involve the greatest number of realities of the sport ecosystem through concrete actions aimed at guaranteeing greater protection of the climate.
To date, over 200 organizations have joined and embraced the proposal. «This is an important moment for the entire Foundation – commented Vincenzo Novari, CEO of the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation – which makes sustainability and environmental protection two of its qualifying themes. The international community, and all the young people who will populate the streets of Milan from today, are asking us for attention on an issue that is now an urgency not only for our country, but for the whole world. The choice to join the Sports for climate action framework, promoted by the UN and signed by the IOC, among others, represents a further declaration of intent towards the 2026 Games ».

The next appointments

Next Friday, 1 October 2021, a representation of the Foundation’s board, led by Gloria Zavatta, Sustainability & Legacy Director, will meet the national Environmental Associations to continue the discussion started last January. The goal of the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation, in continuity with the new models proposed by the IOC within the New Norm and the 2020 + 5 Agenda, is to work to leave a positive social and environmental legacy for the territories involved.
