“Mourinho kicked me out of the locker room on my birthday; “I was training alone for three months.”

Former Manchester United player Bastian Schweinsteiger revealed new details about his turbulent time at Old Trafford on Gary Neville’s podcast. Schweinsteiger joined the club in the 2015-16 season under Louis Van Gaal but struggled under José Mourinho in the following season.

The German midfielder missed multiple games due to injuries and national team commitments, which led to his exclusion from the team for the 2016-17 season. Schweinsteiger recalled being told by director of football John Murtough that he could not enter the dressing room on his birthday, without any prior warning.

Despite complying with Van Gaal’s agreement to rehabilitate in Germany, Schweinsteiger was ultimately sidelined by Mourinho and trained alone for three months before leaving the club. Former United legend Gary Neville expressed shock and embarrassment at Schweinsteiger’s treatment, stating that it constituted unfair dismissal.

After departing from Manchester United, Schweinsteiger played for MLS team Chicago Fire from 2017 to 2019. Mourinho, who is now eyeing a return to the club, believes Schweinsteiger has “unfinished business” at Old Trafford.
