Mattarella’s message

“On June 2, seventy-six years ago, with the choice of the Republic, the Italian people set out on the path of peace, dismissing the warlike adventures of an authoritarian regime such as the fascist one. An option that was then solemnly ratified in the Constitution. Our contribution – and in it of the Armed Forces – to the cause of peace and international cooperation was characterized by joining the North Atlantic Treaty signed between freedom-loving countries, with the gradual and growing construction of European unity, with participation in the UN and its initiatives “, writes Mattarella in the message sent to the Chief of Defense Staff, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone.” It was possible to create a climate of growing trust – recalls the Head of State – which, by decreasing tensions, made it possible to reduce the reasons and climate of a confrontation sometimes to the limits of conflict, without however ever going beyond those that lead to the conflict “.

“Peace – emphasizes the head of state – does not impose itself on its own but is the fruit of the will and concrete commitment of men and states. A peace based on respect for people and their dignity, territorial borders, the rule of law, democratic sovereignty; a peace based on the use of diplomacy as a means of resolving crises between nations; a peace based on respect for human rights. Italy and the entire international community play a central role in fostering dialogue. We must do it united, together. Our experience has shown us how stable and lasting coexistence can be built, even in the aftermath of bloody conflicts. We reiterate it today while we are alongside the attacked Ukraine. The Republic is committed to building peace conditions and its Armed Forces, on the basis of the mandates entrusted by the Government and Parliament, contribute to this task. As seventy-six years ago, we reiterate the reasons that prompted the Italian people, after the sufferings of two world wars and of the dictatorship, to travel the long way towards a democratic state, whose values of freedom, peace, equality and justice became the supreme principles of reference for citizens and the country. The Armed Forces, protagonists in this path, in Italy and abroad, are confirmed as a precious resource, as evidenced also by the events of the management of the pandemic “added Mattarella. And he concluded:” The awards received by our Armed Forces are eloquent proof of the quality of their commitment and the credibility they have earned. On this feast day, soldiers, sailors, airmen, carabinieri, financiers and civilian personnel, of every order and rank, receive appreciation and gratitude for the service offered to the community. Long live the Armed Forces, Long live the Republic!“.
