With a sublime round of 64 strokes, Thomas Detry has finished in the top three at the Houston Open golf tournament (USD 9.1 million), which takes place at the Memorial Park golf course in Houston, Texas, USA.

Detry, who needed 70 strokes for his first round, completed a round of 64 strokes on day two, six under par, the second best round of the day. The 31-year-old Brussels resident, who started on the second half of the course, made three birdies in his first nine holes, making one mistake. He managed four more birdies on his next nine holes. With his round of six under par, Detry immediately rose from 54th to third place. In the standings he has three strokes more than the American Tony Finau, who took the lead with a round of 62 strokes and is two strokes ahead of the Argentinian Alejandro Tosti.

“Fantastic lap in windy conditions,” said Detry. “I got off to a very good start with two birdies on the first two holes. I seem to play better in windy conditions. The short game was simply very good. On the holes where I had problems, I managed to make par with a few long putts. With a good start I was almost certain that I would make the cut and you can play without pressure. Hopefully I can continue the positive trend.”

Adrien Dumont de Chassart has also qualified for the final rounds. The 24-year-old Walloon Brabander, who was in shared 35th place with an opening round of 69 strokes, needed 72 strokes for his second round, after three birdies but also three bogeys and a double bogey. With his total of 142 strokes, two above par, he had to lose 26 places, narrowly making the cut in 61st place.
