Diaper-free changing system with a sustainable mission

Millions of diapers are thrown away every day and mountains of garbage grow. Magdalena Binder strives to offer an environmentally friendly alternative with her startup Mata Origin. The diaper-free changing system is intended not only to strengthen the bond between parents and child, but also to help reduce the enormous amount of diaper waste.

The founder Magdalena Binder found her inspiration during a stay in India. There she experienced that babies were not wearing diapers and instead they were “kept away”. So when the time for business comes, they are taken out and held over a bowl, sink or something similar. This experience stuck with Binder and years later became an essential part of the founding story. Binder recognized a growing trend toward diaper-free parenting and decided to offer a sustainable solution.

Mata Origin offers baby clothing that allows parents to raise their children without traditional disposable diapers. Made from materials such as merino wool, cotton, natural rubber and wooden buttons, the clothing allows for ease of use for parents while also taking into account their babies’ elimination needs. The Mata Origin diaper crawler is available for 60 euros.

Mata Origin: Sustainability as a driving force

Mata Origin’s mission goes beyond providing products. The company strives to create a platform and community for natural motherhood and to develop products that promote minimalist and natural parenting. By avoiding disposable diapers, families can save up to 1,000 euros and a ton of waste, which not only relieves the burden on the environment but also conserves resources, according to the message.

Challenges and future prospects

Despite the promising concept, Binder and her team face challenges, particularly in connection with the procurement of raw materials. The pandemic has caused shortages, but Mata Origin is working to become more regional and sustainable through new collaborations. In the long term, the company aims to expand its product offering and offer a wider range of products that meet the needs of parents and children.

The interest of investors seems to vary. “I was a bit hesitant at first as to whether I even liked the product idea, but now I’m really positively impressed,” says Eveline Steinberger. Binder has already given 20 percent of the company shares to investors to support the startup’s growth.

The founder of Mata Origin will appear in front of the investor jury at the startup show 2 Minutes 2 Million on April 16th. More information about all startups in the new season can be found here.
