Joyor S5 e-scooter in the test: despite being street legal, much faster than permitted

When we had the Joyor Y8-S (test report) in the editorial office in October 2023, we were thrilled with the e-scooter. Because the one with 619 euros (Geekmaxi, voucher code 4VUxBP8D) Comparatively cheap e-scooters do many things better than many more expensive models. It comes with an incredibly large battery, which immediately catapults it to first place in our list of e-scooters with the thickest batteries. It is also street legal, has a powerful engine, decent suspension on both tires and powerful brakes. We are all the more pleased to now have the Joyor S5 off-road e-scooter in our editorial team and to put it through its paces. The test reveals an unexpected detail. We show the best electric scooters from around 60 tests in our best e-scooter list.

Conclusion

The Joyor S5 is a recommended e-scooter for its price range. The look is convincing, the suspension takes the fear out of country roads and the battery is large. The engine starts slowly, but then develops a lot of power after a few meters. The two mechanical disc brakes are basically good, but they always respond to excessive engine braking.

We are amazed at how easily the maximum speed of the e-scooter can be increased. Finally, the Joyor S5 has a general operating license (ABE) and can drive legally on German roads. In principle, we can still recommend the Joyor S5. His biggest competitor comes from his own company. The Joyor Y8-S (test report) is only slightly more expensive, but is superior to the S5 in some respects.

Preis

The Joyor S5 was provided to us by Geekmaxi. However, it sold out there after a short time. We discovered its currently cheapest price on Amazon. There it costs 599 euros.

Structure & battery

As with most e-scooters, assembly is quick and easy. Basically all you need to do is tighten two screws. Unusual: Joyor includes a replacement hose with the S5 in the event of a breakdown. Before your first ride you should check all screws and the air pressure, fully charge the e-scooter and don’t forget your bicycle helmet (list of the best). The three-pin charging port is located on the running board facing upwards. If you forget to close the protective flap, it will fill with water when it rains. The battery has a high capacity of 624 watt hours. This means ranges of 30 kilometers and more are possible. More about batteries in our list of the best e-scooters with the largest battery.

Display

The large and stylish color display with USB port reflects in sunlight. It sits in the middle above the height-adjustable handlebars and displays, among other things, the selected support level, the speed and the remaining capacity of the battery and five bars. The thumb grip is pleasantly smooth. The three buttons on the left side of the handlebars are self-explanatory. The front light is bright, but sits a bit too low.

Folding mechanism

The folding mechanism is a bit stiff, but reliable. Unfortunately, unlike its big brother Joyor Y8-S (test report), the Joyor S5 cannot put on the handlebars. When folded, the 22 kilogram e-scooter can be lifted using the handlebars.

suspension

The Joyor S5 has suspension on both the front and rear wheels, which reminds us of the Fritz running board (test report) in terms of design. However, the suspension is set a little too hard. We haven’t found a way to customize this ourselves. Nevertheless, it is comparatively pleasant to drive on dirt roads and gravel roads. The thick 10-inch tires also contribute to this, as they can absorb a lot themselves.

The running board is exceptionally wide and raised towards the rear. The rear mudguard looks a bit wobbly. There is no mudguard on the front wheel, just a splash guard. However, this does not reliably keep dirt away, so we always find a few splashes of dirt on our shoes after driving through mud and rain.

Brakes

The two disc brakes are fine. However, the engine brake on the rear wheel always switches on immediately. This only seems to know the states zero and one. The Joyor S5 always brakes too hard and gentle braking is not possible. Or is it? If you loosen the plug connection on the corresponding cable behind the brake, it no longer controls the engine brake. However, we would still advise against it, as this could potentially affect the general operating license (ABE).

Motor

The 500-watt motor on the rear wheel initially pulls very slowly. Driving off quickly is not possible. After a few meters, however, it develops its full torque and accelerates even heavier drivers to 20 kilometers per hour up to the maximum permitted payload of 120 kilograms. However, this maximum speed can be increased with a simple key combination. This is not allowed in Germany and is certainly not covered by the ABE. We strongly advise against this “jailbreak”.
