This is how the new payment method works in the supermarket

In the summer, Kaufland introduced a new system with the “K-Scan” hand-held scanners that enable customers to get through the checkouts faster. Another innovation will follow in 2023: Kaufland Pay. This is a completely new payment method that should do without cash, bank cards and the Internet.

So far, shopping in the supermarket can usually be paid for in the classic way with cash, bank card or even with a smartphone. In cooperation with Bluecode, Kaufland would like to offer a new payment method in the future, which is to be integrated into its own app. The special thing about Kaufland Pay: It should also work when users are not currently logged into the mobile Internet.

This is how Bluecode works via the Kaufland app

The supermarket chain implements Kaufland Pay in its app together with the Austrian-Swiss company Bluecode and the service provider Payone. From autumn, the payment process will be part of the Kaufland Card, the in-house app, which also acts as a digital customer card. Until the official integration, Kaufland Pay would like to be tested first, as reported by the “Lebensmittel-Zeitung” portal.

Using the new payment method is very easy. Customers register in the app and enter their account details under the appropriate tab. They can then pay for all purchases via the app, regardless of the value of the goods. At checkout, they scan the displayed QR code, which transmits the respective purchase amount to the app. The money will then be deducted from the account by SEPA direct debit.

Kaufland Pay also works offline

Kaufland Pay should also work offline if customers are temporarily not logged into the Internet. Customers and cashiers can tell that the payment process via Kaufland Pay was successful from the color change of the QR code. This is colored from black to blue, hence the name Bluecode. The provider advertises that the Bluecode process can also be used at vending machines, in online shops and at self-checkouts at self-service checkouts. Thanks to the integration into the Kaufland Card, customers can collect bonus points during the payment process without having to scan another card.

However, Kaufland Pay is not the first individualized payment method to use Bluecode. The drugstore chains Rossmann and Müller, the Globus DIY store and selected companies within the Rewe Group also use the payment method. Rewe itself has been using Bluecode in Austria since early 2021.
