Alone Qunut Fajr Prayer with Procedures

Bandung

Doa qunut subuh is a practice that is recited during the second rak’ah of the morning prayer, precisely after I’tidal and before performing the first prostration.

There are differences of opinion regarding the practice of the morning qunut prayer. Launching the Book of Al-Fiqh ‘ala al-madzahib al-khamsah by Muhammad Jawad Mughniyah, reciting the qunut prayer during Fajr prayer is sunnah according to the Maliki school, while Shafi’i is recommended to be read when in a bad situation or when suffering from misfortune. Meanwhile, Imam Nawawi in the Book of Al-Adzkar condemned the recitation of the qunut prayer as a muakkad sunnah.

Proof of the Sunnah of reading this qunut prayer is mentioned in a narration from Anas bin Malik RA, he said:

The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, continued to recite Qunoot at dawn, until he left this world

Meaning: “The Messenger of God always recited qunut during dawn prayer until he died.” (HR. Ahmad).

Because it is sunnah, Muslims do not need to worry if they do not practice the morning qunut prayer because it is not obligatory to do so.

When is the Qunut Fajr Prayer read?

Citing the book Fiqih Islam wa Adillatuhu by Wahbah az-Zuhaili, according to scholars of the Syafi’iyah school, the morning prayer is read after ruku’. However, Malikiyah scholars are of the opinion that it is better to recite the morning qunut prayer before ruku’.

The madhhab scholars agree that it is makruh to read the qunut dawn prayer apart from the dawn prayer, according to the zhahir Malikiyah.

Specifically, the qunut prayer is practiced after reading the iktidal dhikr, namely “Rabbana lakal hamdu” or other dhikr.

Sheikh Ibn ‘Utsaimin said that when the imam reads the qunut prayer, the congregation should follow the imam in the qunut and agree with him if the morning qunut prayer is done in congregation.
