According to CCTV news, at 15:00 local time on the 16th, Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin announced his resignation through a televised speech.Muhyiddin stated that he had already submitted his resignation during the meeting with the Supreme Head of State at noon that day because he had lost the majority support of the House of Commons. Its cabinet members also resigned at the same time.

On the same day, the National Palace of Malaysia issued a statement stating that the head of state has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Muhyiddin and the entire cabinet with immediate effect. The statement stated that the head of state also appointed Muhyiddin as the caretaker prime minister until the new prime minister is elected.

According to previous reports from CCTV News, Muhyiddin had planned to submit a motion of confidence in Congress on September 7 to seek majority support. On the evening of the 14th, Muhyiddin made a televised speech, saying that no member of Congress currently has the majority support, so he himself cannot resign rashly, lest the country fall into anarchy. Muhyiddin also put forward seven reform proposals, hoping to discuss the possibility of cross-party cooperation with the opposition parties, but they were unanimously rejected by the opposition parties. Umno Chairman Zahid within the ruling coalition also said that he would not consider the conditions imposed by the prime minister who has lost his legitimacy. According to the Malaysian Constitution, if the Prime Minister cannot obtain the support of a majority of members of the House of Commons, he must resign, unless the Supreme Head of State dissolves the parliament on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Muhyiddin became the Prime Minister of Malaysia in March 2020 (he has served as Prime Minister of Malaysia for about 18 months), replacing Mahathir who had previously resigned as prime minister. Not long ago, Muhyiddin’s leader of the ruling coalition’s largest member of the Malay National Unity Agency (UMNO) Chairman Zahid and some Umno MPs announced the withdrawal of support for Muhyiddin, causing Muhyiddin’s loss of parliament. More than half of the House supports it.
