Cannabis legalization: Traffic light coalition finally agrees

The politicians in the traffic light group now apparently agree on cannabis legalization. The law could therefore come into force on April 1st.

However, the law must first pass through the Bundestag. And the Federal Council also still has to deal with the plans.

Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) has now earmarked the week from February 19th to 23rd for the passage of the law in parliament.

“Real milestone”

In summary, the law should modernize drug policy, strengthen prevention and improve health, child and youth protection. The three parliamentary group vice-presidents also agree that the new law would decriminalize consumers and effectively combat the black market.

The regulations are “a real milestone for modern drug policy.” Coalition circles said on Thursday evening that no significant changes had been made to the content of the plans.

Therefore, the effects of the law on child and youth protection as well as on organized crime should now be reviewed “in a timely manner”. The expertise of the Federal Criminal Police Office will also be taken into account for this purpose.

The SPD, Greens and FDP had already agreed in November that cannabis should be removed from the list of banned substances in the Narcotics Act. In addition, from April 1st, adults will be allowed to grow and possess a certain amount of the drug themselves.

The path will also be cleared for clubs to grow together from July 1st.

Domestic politicians from the SPD in particular had expressed concerns in January. Therefore, the law could not yet be passed in the Bundestag. The legalization of cannabis is a project from the traffic light government’s coalition agreement.
