The dramatic quarter-final exit in the FA Cup with Liverpool hurt Jürgen Klopp, but he doesn’t blame his team too much. He only quarrels with one reporter.

Manchester – Jürgen Klopp’s frustration over his failed chance to win the FA Cup caught a TV reporter. “That’s a bit of a stupid question,” complained the Liverpool FC coach in an interview with the streaming service Viaplay after the wild 3:4 after extra time in the quarter-finals at Manchester United.

Klopp was asked why his team no longer played with their usual intensity in the final stages of the game. “I’m pretty disappointed with that question, but you obviously thought it was a good one,” Klopp added after pointing out the Reds’ many games this season.

Klopp breaks off TV interview

When the TV reporter wanted to follow up, Klopp interrupted him and said: “You’re apparently not in good shape and I don’t have any nerves for you.” Then the 56-year-old broke off the interview and walked away.

Klopp didn’t want to blame his team after the spectacle. “We tried absolutely everything, but today we didn’t get enough – not to say nothing,” said the Reds coach, who is leaving at the end of the season.

It was “absolutely extraordinary what we played here,” said the German, “but we didn’t close the game. And if you leave it open, away at Old Trafford – it’s clear that they’ll have chances.”

Liverpool exit through late goals

Liverpool missed their third goal after the break and were punished for it shortly before the end of regular time when Antony made it 2-2 (87′). The second-placed team in the English Premier League also failed to take the lead again in extra time by Harvey Elliott (105′). Marcus Rashford (112.) and Amad Diallo (120.+1) turned the game in favor of the hosts.

In the end it was “really hard for us,” Klopp admitted: “It was the first time I saw my team while they were struggling.” Both teams fought extremely hard to reach the semi-finals and were absolutely aware of the importance of the game, he said. He was happy with the commitment, “but of course not with the result.”

Klopp can still win two more titles with Liverpool in his farewell season after the League Cup triumph. The championship in the English league is still possible, and in the Europa League the favored Reds will meet Atalanta Bergamo from Italy in the quarter-finals.
