The singer was best known for hits such as It wasn’t me and Mr. Boombastic. Typical of his songs? His Jamaican accent, which many thought was his real voice. After all, Shaggy – real name Orville Richard Burrell – was born in Kingston, Jamaica. But he moved to the United States at a young age and lived in New York, so in everyday life he simply speaks with an American accent.
“I got this voice from jokingly mocking the drill instructors in the Navy who spoke to the boys. Because it motivates your platoon,” he says in the video. “I then sang that song in that voice because I thought it sounded cool. Then Oh Carolina suddenly became popular, and I suddenly had to sing every song that way. If you listen to Big up or Mampie, they are in a different tone.”
The internet is already scratching its own head. “Is this Shaggy’s government voice?” or “Wait, Shaggy doesn’t have an accent?” and “Damn, Shaggy really said: It wasn’t me”.
