After drama against Sweden: France reaches for European Championship gold against Denmark

Drama in the semi-finals, the defending champions have been dethroned: France’s handball players kept their nerve in the Swedish thriller and reached the European Championship final thanks to their huge comeback qualities. The Olympic champion won the high-class and thrilling duel against the Scandinavians with 34:30 (27:27, 17:11) after extra time and is now aiming for his fourth European Championship gold in the final on Sunday (5:45 p.m.) in Cologne. The opponent in the final is world champion Denmark.

The Swedes made up for a seven-goal deficit against the French and were still leading 27:25 until 28 seconds before the end – but Nikola Karabatic and Co. came back. With a direct free throw from Elohim Prandi, which slammed off the bottom edge of the crossbar into the goal with the final siren, the record world champion saved himself into extra time, where he turned up the heat and gave the Scandinavians no chance. However, the Swedes protested. When looking at the slow motion of the free throw, one could see that Prandi’s foot came off the ground too early and the hit was therefore irregular.
