A big day of celebration was expected in Cortina d’Ampezzo, home of the women’s Alpine skiing World Cup. But what happened during the first descent on the Olympia delle Tofane inevitably shocked people. Several athletes fell during the race, including Federica Brignone (without apparent consequences), while among those who did not escape unscathed was Mikaela Shiffrin. The leader of the general classification lost control in the first section of the track and crashed badly into the protections. The American got up after several minutes, moving away from the site of the impact using her poles as crutches, with pain in her left knee.
