Hungary’s president resigns after child abuse pardon scandal

The Hungarian president has resigned from office after the hatred she received after granting a presidential pardon to a prisoner for a child abuse case.

Katalin Novák has announced on the national news channel ‘Hungarian M1’ that she resigns from her position as president of the country.

This announcement is a direct consequence of the presidential pardon that Novak granted to a man who was sentenced for covering up several pedophile incidents in a Hungarian school and for which thousands of citizens demonstrated yesterday.

The now former president of Hungary cut short a trip to the Middle East to respond to her role in that presidential pardon.

Novak admits in his statement that Hungarians must hope that their president does not make mistakes and that he announces his resignation as president of the republic.

In that announcement, the president thanked her family and to all those who have helped her in her work: “Politics is a harsh and sometimes cruel world.” And it ended with the message of God bless Hungary.

Viktor Orbán stated this week that he would propose a review of the law to exclude convicts linked to child abuse cases.
