Jakarta

There are many rumors that Jakarta has lost its status as the capital of Indonesia since February 15 2024. Is that true?

In front of the MPR/DPR/DPD RI building, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday (5/3), Chairman of the DPR Legislative Body (Baleg) Supratman said that currently Jakarta had lost its status as a Special Capital Region (DKI).

“The DKI Bill lost its status on February 15. That’s the implication of the IKN Law. Well, it ends on February 15,” said Supratman.

The DPR Baleg will speed up the discussion of the DKJ Bill in line with the loss of Jakarta’s status. According to him, Jakarta will remain a region with specialties which will later be discussed again in the discussion of the DKJ Bill.

“Now DKI doesn’t have any status. That’s what makes us have to speed things up. Well, thoughts about its specificity are what gave birth to ideas, one of which concerns the issue of Article 10. Because it’s called a special region. Apart from its specificity, it is for the economic, financial, industrial centers, and so on,” he explained.

Experts Urge DPR Legislative Council to Immediately Complete DKJ Bill

Sebelas Maret University (UNS) constitutional law expert Agus Riwanto said that currently Jakarta is experiencing a legal vacuum regarding status. He suggested that the DPR immediately finalize the DKJ Bill.

Agus also proposed that the DKJ Bill re-include the process of transitioning the country’s capital. If the DPR does not pass the DKJ Bill, Agus believes that President Jokowi can intervene. According to him, Jokowi can issue government regulations in lieu of law (perppu).

“We must immediately make a perppu to ensure that the position of the capital of IKN is not ready so that it remains in DKI until the time comes for IKN to be ready as the nation’s capital,” he said on CNN Indonesia.
