Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania wants to go its own way alongside Bavaria when it comes to issuing payment cards. The federal states have agreed on standards for the introduction of a planned payment card for refugees.
14 of the 16 states are aiming for a joint award procedure, as the Hessian State Chancellery announced for the Prime Minister’s Conference. Those entitled to benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act should in future be able to receive part of the benefits as credit on this card instead of a cash payment.
MV is seeking a special approach to the award
In response to a request from NDR, the Ministry of the Interior in Schwerin emphasizes: Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is only taking a special approach in the current procurement process – the content is based on the jointly developed recommendations. The background is that the state government expects a faster process. State Interior Minister Christian Pegel (SPD) emphasized last week that he wanted to put out tenders in the spring so that the introduction of the payment card could begin in October. The federal states that jointly advertise are aiming for an award “by the summer”.

Common minimum standards for payment cards
In terms of content, the federal and state governments have now agreed on minimum standards. For example, there should be a card that should – at least partially – replace cash payments. Each country still decides for itself how much money there is. For example, Minister Pegel spoke of 148 euros in pocket money that refugees in initial reception centers already receive here in the country. However, transfers are not possible with the card. According to the information, this is intended to prevent money from being sent on to the countries of origin.
