Prime Minister’s Office

It was learned on the 8th that the government is considering postponing the revision of the basic disaster prevention plan for the Nankai Trough mega-earthquake, which was scheduled for this spring, according to interviews with related parties. In addition to work delays caused by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake, there are also voices calling for the lessons learned from the earthquake to be reflected in the plan, so no timeline has been set.

In 2012, the government announced damage estimates that up to 323,000 people would die. The basic plan drawn up in 2014 set a goal of reducing the estimated number of deaths by 80% by the end of fiscal 2023 through measures such as earthquake-proofing buildings and preparing tsunami evacuation buildings.

A working group of experts has been reviewing damage estimates since last year. The government plans to revise the basic plan based on the report.
